NIS continues to invest in the development of the community

07.05.2025.

Thanks to the partnership between the Municipality of Srbobran and NIS, the complete reconstruction project of the roof of the “Vuk Karadžić” Elementary School in Srbobran has been successfully finished. This project has provided safer and better conditions for work and stay of children and employees at the school and is a part of broader support for the development of local communities, which NIS has been providing as part of the “Common Cause Community” social responsibility program for the sixteenth year in a row.

The value of this infrastructure project is approximately RSD 16 million and is the result of a joint investment by NIS, which provided half of the funds, and the Municipality of Srbobran, which funded the remaining part. This investment made the complete reconstruction possible, as well as the renovation of the roof of 2,454 square meters, which significantly improved the energy efficiency of the building and created safer and better conditions for teaching.

The “Vuk Karadžić” Elementary School is the oldest educational institution within the Municipality of Srbobran and the only one that provides inclusive education and, as a participant in the project “For Cleaner and Greener Schools”, pays special attention to the topics and activities aimed at environmental protection.
Four hundred and twenty students attend the school, including children with developmental disabilities and children with special educational needs.

On the occasion of the successful completion of the project, the school was visited by the President of the Municipality of Srbobran, Radivoj Debeljački, and Igor Korać, a representative of NIS, accompanied by the school principal, Ružica Milić.

The President of the Municipality of Srbobran, Radivoj Debeljački, emphasised the significant and  broad cooperation between NIS and the Municipality of Srbobran and pointed out the great significance of socially responsible operations of NIS. “We are here today in a school that has had its entire roof covering replaced, which was a really big problem. While communicating not only with the school principal, but also with our fellow citizens, we saw the need to reconstruct this part of the school, and I think that through this project we have shown unity and how this partnership can be implemented in such beautiful projects as is the case of the ‘Vuk Karadžić’ Elementary School,” Radivoj Debeljački said.

Igor Korac, the NIS representative, expressed his gratitude for the long-term and exceptional partnership between the Municipality of Srbobran and NIS. “This municipality is of great importance to us and we must move in a common direction and have good cooperation.  We hope that this cooperation will continue in the years ahead, and I am grateful to the president of the Municipality for the extraordinary cooperation,” he said.

The principal of the “Vuk Karadžić” Elementary School expressed her gratitude to NIS and the local self-government for recognizing the decades-old problem and helping solve it through two major projects. “Thanks to these investments, 420 students of this school now attend classes in a safe environment, and I am sure that nearly 60 employees feel more motivated to pass on their knowledge and skills to the younger generations,” said the principal Ružica Milić.

On this occasion, the next phase of improving the school infrastructure was announced – the construction of a 50kW solar power plant, which will be installed on the very new roof. This project, supported within the “Common Cause Community” Program of NIS, which was implemented in 2024, will enable the school to produce green energy and make it one of the examples of sustainable education in Serbia.
