Compressed Natural Gas Production and Wholesale Facility in Gas Field “Ostrovo” Commissioned

May 23, 2017

CEO of NIS Kirill Tyurdenev and Minister of Mining and Energy in the Government of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Antić ceremoniously commissioned the compressed natural gas production and wholesale facility of NIS in the gas field “Ostrovo” today. The planned daily output of the newly constructed facility is 25 tonnes of compressed natural gas, which is around 9,000 tonnes of this energy carrier per year. The total value of the investment – construction of a gathering gas station and a compressed natural gas production facility is RSD 400,000,000 and it was realised this March. Owing to its properties, compressed natural gas is considered the energy carrier of the future. Its main component is methane, which has the lowest coefficient of CО₂ emissions compared to other petroleum products. Therefore, it helps preserve the quality of the environment and is considered an environmentally clean fuel. On the other hand, it is a cost-effective fuel and its use ensures excellent vehicle performance. Compressed natural gas is used as an energy carrier or a power fuel. It is used as a heating fuel in industry and households, but also as a motor fuel for internal combustion engines. Compressed natural gas is used as an energy carrier or a power fuel. “Compressed natural gas is the “fuel of the future”, which may replace petrol, diesel or liquefied petroleum gas, with the lowest emissions of harmful gases. Ever since 2014, when NIS opened the Palić facility, we have been producing and selling this energy carrier, thus fulfilling two objectives: we meet market demands for alternative and less costly fuels and promote responsibility towards the environment. The “Ostrovo” facility, which we are opening today, has been planned to produce around 25 tonnes of compressed natural gas a day. We are planning to go a step further by harnessing the power of fine-quality advanced fuels,” said Kirill Tyurdenev, the CEO of NIS. The planned daily output of the newly constructed facility is 25 tonnes of compressed natural gas, which is around 9,000 tonnes of this energy carrier per year. “Naftna Industrija Srbije is an extremely important company to the Republic of Serbia and our Government, and we pay particular attention to its further development. We expect that it will continue being a leader in its area of operation and one of the most stable elements of our economy and trade. On the other hand, the gas market is growing and so are customer demands, which sometimes cannot be matched by the development of infrastructure and this is exactly why the facility in Ostrovo is extremely important, as it provides us with an opportunity to cope with demands of industrial customers without constructing a gas pipeline. This facility will allow us to meet business demands for compressed gas in the entire area. This project is also significant from an environmental point of view, given the fact that compressed gas is the purest fuel of the highest quality - the fuel of the future. I would like to express my gratitude to Naftna Industrija Srbije for hard work and commitment to this project,” Aleksandar Antić, Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, said on this occasion. Kirill Tyurdenev, the CEO of NIS Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Serbia Alexander Chepurin underscored that NIS operates successfully in the Serbian market and is one of the most efficient Serbian companies, adding that energy business is one of the most vital foundations of cooperation between Serbia and Russia. Aleksandar Antić, Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy “Commissioning of the compressed natural gas production and sale facility is of utmost importance to Serbia, and particularly to the local economy and the Town of Požarevac. We are pleased with investment works in the territory of the Town of Požarevac. NIS built a kilometre of asphalt road and the residents of Ostrovo and Kostolac are extremely grateful for this socially responsible action,” stated Mayor of Požarevac Bane Spasović. Alexander Chepurin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Serbia In 2014, NIS started the production and wholesale of compressed natural gas in the oil and gas field “Palić”. Since mid-2015, this energy carrier has been available to retail customers at NIS petrol stations. NIS is the first major network of petrol stations in Serbia to offer compressed natural gas, which is how the company reaffirmed itself as the leader in innovation in the market of Serbia and the region. For the time being, the fuel is sold at “NIS Petrol” filling stations “Novi Sad 10” and “Čačak 1”. Bane Spasović, Mayor of Požarevac Compressed natural gas is natural, i.e. underground rock formation gas compressed to the pressure of 220 to 250 bar.
