NIS supported holding of Serbia’s fifth Physics Olympiad

April 28, 2017

These winners will make up Serbia’s Olympic Team to compete at the International Physics Olympiad taking place in Indonesia this July. Winners have been declared at a ceremony held in the laboratory, which NIS outfitted within the Belgrade University School of Physics. The Grand Gold Statuette “Power of Knowledge” was awarded to Marko Šušnjar, a student of the Belgrade Mathematics High School. The Grand Silver Statuette went to Dušan Đorđević, another student of the Belgrade Mathematics High School, with Ognjen Тоšić and Vuk Radović sharing the Grand Bronze Statuette. They also study at the Belgrade Mathematics High School. Novak Stanojević of Niš “Svetozar Marković” High School won the Small Statuette. These winners will make up Serbia’s Olympic Team to compete at the International Physics Olympiad taking place in Indonesia this July. These exceptional accomplishments of the young physicists should also be credited to their teachers: Natašа Čanković in the Belgrade Mathematics High School and Ljiljana Kostić of Niš “Svetozar Marković” High School. This success would not be possible without their knowledge, dedication and commitment. “We are quite exhausted, but also so excited that we are the winners of this Olympiad and moreover that we are going to compete at the International Physics Olympiad. This time round, the tasks presented were more complex than the previous time, which made it all the more so interesting to solve them. I really enjoyed the process. Our preparations were greatly facilitated by physics laboratories, which NIS equipped here at the University School of Physics. I believe this warrants we will be up to the mark for the upcoming international competition“, said Marko Šušnjar, an absolute winner of Serbia’s Physics Olympiad. During the first day of the competition, the participants demonstrated their knowledge in experimental part, while on the second they addressed theory. Other than Serbia’s Physics Olympiad, NIS also facilitates and organises Olympiads in mathematics, chemistry and Russian language. In addition to staging national competitions, the company funds Serbia’s team’s travels and participation at the international Olympiads Ivan Dojčinović, the chair of Serbia’s Physicists Association, has pointed out that Serbia’s Physics Olympiad presents a great challenge for the participants, as in their majority they are the pupils in the fourth grade of high schools. So, their participation at an International Physics Olympiad provides them a better chance to enrol in prestigious universities. "These children have put a lot of effort and hard work in this; we are here to support them.  This Olympiad is a good chance for the students to prepare well for the International Olympiad, as the complexity of the tasks featuring is the same as of those they will face at the International Olympiad. This is exactly why we expect brilliant performance there. Naturally, all this would not have been possible, had it not been for the support offered by NIS, since from the outset of the “Power of Knowledge” programme a raft of physics laboratories all over Serbia have been renovated, while the University School of Physics alone was outfitted with two laboratories providing quality conditions for students and high school pupils work", Dojčinović said. Serbia’s Olympic Team won the “Power of Knowledge” statuettes, while the Olympiad winner, Marko Šušnjar, was also presented a watch by a Swiss “Growana” Company, which was also presented to the last year winner of the gold medal at the International Physics Olympiad, Mihajlo Sporić, who currently studies at the Belgrade School of Physics. Other than Serbia’s Physics Olympiad, NIS also facilitates and organises Olympiads in mathematics, chemistry and Russian language. In addition to staging national competitions, the company funds Serbia’s team’s travels and participation at the international Olympiads. As part of its “Power of Knowledge”, NIS has been supporting the development of science and education, mostly by investing in the young talents and by creating quality conditions for their upgrade. Acting on its slogan “The Future Works”, the company delivers a raft of socially responsible projects, majority of them dedicated to the young.
