Serbia’s Maths Victors

April 9, 2014

NIS presided over the closing ceremony in Belgrade today, which declared winners in Serbia’s second mathematical Olympiad. The big Golden statuette “Power of Knowledge” was awarded to Žarko Ranđelović, a student of the “Svetozar Marković” Secondary school in the town of Niš, while his fellow student from the same school Anđela Šarković won a Silver statuette, which also went to Dušan Drobnjak from Belgrade’s Mathematical Secondary School. Another student of that school, Maksim Stokić, took the big Bronze statuette, while the small “Power of Knowledge” statuettes went to his school mates Luka Vukelić and Ivan Tanasijević. As many as 36 Serbia’s best young mathematicians competed for two days, on April 5-6, in the contest held in Novi Sad. The winners made it for the International Mathematical Olympiad to take place in South Africa. The victorious competitors received the prizes from Teodor von Burg, Serbia’s best contemporary young mathematician, who was the most successful participant from our country at the International Mathematical Olympiad, currently a student at Oxford. – The “Power of Knowledge” campaign’s best accomplishment is the recognition of your efforts. We will strive to set up a system to further facilitate your progress. We anticipated projects for teaching personnel and additional courses for the most gifted ones. We hope that this cooperation will exist in the long years to come for the mutual benefit, - said Snežana Lakićević, NIS liaison officer with universities. Mathematical Olympiad in Serbia is held under the auspices of NIS “Power of Knowledge” programme, aimed at facilitating the education development of pupils and students, primarily those excelling in sciences. Promoting genuine values, science taking the pride of place, is one of the most important NIS activities as a socially responsible company. In pursuance of that, for more than five straight years NIS has been pooling efforts with universities and other educational institutions to breed professionals and deliver joint R&D projects.
