Environmental protection, industrial safety and occupational safety

Safe working conditions for all employees and business partners are one of the strategic goals of NIS, because it strives to constantly reduce the number of injuries at work and occupational diseases.

The principles of prevention are continuously applied, in order to improve working conditions and reduce the number of negative HSE events. In the field of occupational safety and health, the standards applied by NIS and the existing practice exceed the existing legal obligations. Business decisions are made in accordance with the requirements of national legislation and above the statutory minimum, in order to ensure effective risk management. The safety of contractors is managed and they are required to comply with NIS standards. Protecting and improving physical and mental health, preventing injuries at work and promoting a healthy lifestyle are part of the daily care for the well-being of NIS employees.

Risk management and industrial safety

In accordance with the HSE Policy of the Company and the best world practice, the HSE risk management system based on risk assessment and establishment of barriers has been defined and established, in order to identify all potential hazards present at the workplaces and in work activities, to define adequate risk control measures and thus eliminating the risks for our employees, contractors, visitors, processes and equipment, as well as the environment, i.e., to reduce them to the minimum acceptable level. In order to provide safe working conditions for our employees and contractors:

  • The Act on risk assessment at the workplace and in the work environment was drafted in accordance with the Law;
  • For standard work activities, Instructions for safe work are prepared, and for non-standard activities, job safety analysis is performed immediately before performing work activities in the field;
  • High-risk activities for which a system of work permits has been established have been identified;
  • Specialized studies in the field of risk assessment and analysis are being prepared (HAZID; HAZOP; BowTie);
  • HSErisks are assessed at all stages of investment project management and during organizational changes;
  • Care is taken to raise awareness and competencies in the field of risk management, both employees and our contractors, through the training process, educational monitoring visits, campaigns, production and distribution of leaflets, brochures, manuals.
  • Monitoring of the implementation of the defined risk management system is done through supervisory and inspection visits, where non-compliances are identified and measures for further improvement are defined.

The company is constantly improving process security management in order to:

  • Reduce the risks of major accidents that may have consequences for people, the environment, property, production and reputation to acceptable levels;
  • Ensure the presence of the necessary mitigation mechanisms and preparedness for emergencies in the event of an incident;
  • Provide a database related to incidents in the field of process security, such as Order 1,2,3 (tier – spills of chemical, hazardous and other substances);
  • Raise awareness of risks through learning from incident investigations, thereby improving safety culture and preventing recurrence of incidents;

In addition, for all facilities where hydrocarbons (refineries, collection stations and warehouses) are produced, processed and stored, the Company has performed a risk assessment and prepared safety reports, accident protection plans and accident prevention policies, on the basis of which regular exercises and periodically checks the knowledge of the operator.

Traffic safety

NIS employees cover an average of about 110,000 km every day, as a result of which they are exposed to a large number of traffic risks. NIS pays great attention to the safety of its employees in traffic in order to minimize these risks.

NIS j.s.c. Novi Sad, as a socially responsible company, is constantly taking measures to improve the safety and increase the traffic culture of its employees, with the aim of reducing the risk of adverse events both during and outside working hours.

The company achieves its commitment to reducing the risk of accidents by implementing activities such as:

  • Compliance with regulations and internal requirements of the Company
  • Practical and theoretical training of drivers and users of NIS vehicles, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence.
  • Application of continuous vehicle and driving style monitoring (IVMS – In Vehicle Monitoring System).
  • Investigation of traffic accidents and implementation of preventive measures in order to prevent their recurrence.
  • Campaigns and informing employees about risks, dangers and advice for safe behavior in traffic.
  • Cooperation with relevant institutions and state institutions (Faculty of Transportation, Ministry of Defense, Traffic Safety Agency, etc.).
  • Monitoring of key indicators of traffic safety efficiency, as well as the coefficient of traffic accidents (RAR – Road Accident Rate).

HSE Training courses

In order to reduce injuries at work and improve HSE culture, the Company has established a continuous system of HSE trainings that allows employees to acquire knowledge and skills for risk management at their workplaces as the development of HSE competencies necessary for efficient work and its quality. HSE trainings are harmonized with business needs so that the educational content is focused on the development of knowledge and skills for safe performance of work activities, and includes all forms of education and training that do not belong to the domain of acquiring formal education. Following the world trends, for the needs of HSE trainings, a modern electronic way of training has been developed, which brings the content closer in an interesting and interactive way.

Contractor management

NIS j.s.c. Novi Sad company is continuously working on improving the process of managing contractors in terms of occupational safety and health, environmental protection and fire protection.

Thanks to the efforts of NIS employees in establishing the process of managing contractors, over the past seven years, many contractors have accepted our practice in order to improve the practice in the field of HSE.

By applying it in their companies, they have raised the level of security to a higher level, respecting not only the legal minimum, but also the additional requirements required by NIS.

In our Company, the efficiency of the process of managing contractors from the aspect of NES in all organizational units of the Company is permanently controlled.

Reporting, management and investigation of HSE events

Our company has established the process of HSE Event Management, which includes transparent notification and reporting on HSE events, investigation into the causes of NES events, monitoring of financial impacts, as well as sharing lessons, i.e. learning from HSE events. By HSE events, we mean events that have consequences such as injuries at work, fires, traffic accidents, equipment failures that may endanger human safety and / or have adverse effects on the environment. In accordance with the above, the basic goals of HSE event management are to:

  • React in a timely manner and mitigate the consequences, i.e., to manage HSE events;
  • Act preventively, i.e., we apply measures that will prevent the recurrence of similar events;
  • We are improving the NES management system;
  • We learn and share lessons from events with our employees and contractors.
